The Uncertain Vegan Explained

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

I will begin this blog series with an acknowledgement. I am and always have been a meat eater. Despite knowing about the negative environmental impacts of animal agriculture, I have never tried to adapt to a plant-based diet. However, as a third-year UCL geographer, I have a greater understanding of the human impacts on the environment and this has led me to reconsider some of my consumption choices. I have started The Uncertain Vegan because I want to develop more sustainable food habits, but I am uncertain if converting to a vegan diet is the best choice.

The planetary boundary (PB) concept, introduced in 2009 and further developed by Steffen et al. 2015, aimed to outline the environmental boundaries within which humanity can safely operate (figure 1). In this blog series, I will explore these planetary boundaries and discuss their connection with agriculture. I will also look at different foods and their environmental impacts to find out if converting to veganism is the best way to achieve sustainable food consumption.

And who knows, maybe by the end of this, my meat-eating, milk-drinking, egg-consuming days will be over?
